Basic Navigation (1 Day / 8 hours)
£90.00
Do you enjoy being outside and would like the navigation skills to walk in the hills for a day and be able to put trust in your map and compass skills? The basic navigation course will facilitate just that. You will learn about position finding, contours, map scales and symbols. Throughout the day we will aim to build your navigation skills and confidence using fun outdoor exercises. If you have more time then why not combine this with a one-day advanced navigation course to give you the confidence and freedom to do solo walks.

1 DAY | RATIO 1:6 | £90.00 PER PERSON

Aims
No hill / mountain walking experience or any navigation experience required. But it would be useful to have done some walking even if its just to familiarise yourself with an OS or Harveys map. The course will focus on map and compass skills outside on the ground. Each course is different as it will be tailored to the skill level of the group / individual but all courses will cover the full syllabus of the Basic Navigation Course.

PRE-REQUISITES

Previous walking experience useful but not necessary.
Knowledge of OS map / Harvey maps useful but not necessary.

CONTENT
Throughout the day you will use various maps and compasses to learn the basics of navigation.

To provide a fun and quick learning experience we will use large scale maps to experiment without the issues caused by the outdoor elements on the hill.

Using a compass requires more than one skill. Throughout the day we will practice pacing, bearings, timing and position find techniques.

Throughout the day while walking we will discuss methods of route planning, weather, pacing and timing. To give you an understanding of how all these things and more can affect your day.

The course starts at 0900 hrs but book in at 0830 hrs for a kit check allowing teaching to start at 0900 hrs. Please ensure you carry and wear the Items on the kit list below. We will have time at the end of the day for feedback and the course will be finished by 5 pm at the latest.
